Mean, Median, Mode & Range Calculator
This mean median mode calculator finds the mean, median, mode, and range of numbers you paste, with the sorted list, count, sum, and each step.
How to use
- Paste numbers separated by commas, spaces, semicolons, tabs, or new lines. Decimals and negatives are allowed.
- Choose how many decimal places to show. The default is 4, and trailing zeros are dropped.
- Read the count, sum, sorted list, mean, median, mode, range, minimum, and maximum.
- Use Load example to restore 3, 7, 7, 2, 9, 12, 7, 4, or Clear to empty the list.
Formula
Mean = sum / n. Sort the list for the median: if n is odd, the median is the middle value; if n is even, it is the average of the two middle values. The mode is every value that appears most often. If every distinct value appears the same number of times, there is no mode. Range = maximum − minimum.
Example. The list 3, 7, 7, 2, 9, 12, 7, 4 sorts to 2, 3, 4, 7, 7, 7, 9, 12. Count n = 8 and the sum is 51, so the mean is 51 / 8 = 6.375. The median uses positions 4 and 5: (7 + 7) / 2 = 7. The mode is 7, which appears 3 times. The range is 12 - 2 = 10.
Example. For 2, 4, 6, 8 the median is (4 + 6) / 2 = 5, and there is no mode because every value appears once.
Example. For 1, 1, 2, 2, 3 the modes are 1 and 2, each appearing twice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean, median, and mode?
The mean is the sum of the values divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value of the sorted list. The mode is the value that appears most often.
How do you find the median of an even number of values?
Sort the list and average the two middle numbers. For 2, 4, 6, 8 the median is (4 + 6) / 2 = 5.
Can a data set have more than one mode or no mode?
Yes. If two or more values tie for most frequent, the set is bimodal or multimodal and every tied value is a mode. If every value appears the same number of times, there is no mode.
How do you find the range?
Range = largest value - smallest value. For 3, 7, 12 the range is 12 - 3 = 9.
Which average should I use?
The median resists outliers better than the mean, so it is often used for skewed data like incomes or home prices. The mode is useful for categories or the most common size or score.
