Long Division Calculator With Steps
This long division calculator shows the quotient, remainder, mixed number, and decimal, with every divide, multiply, subtract, and bring-down step.
How to use
- Enter the dividend and the divisor. Decimals are allowed. A divisor of 0 is rejected.
- Choose how many decimal places to show, from 0 to 10.
- Read the quotient with remainder, the mixed number, and the decimal. A repeating block is marked when one appears.
- Check that the divisor times the quotient, plus the remainder, equals the dividend.
Formula
Dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder, and the remainder is smaller in absolute value than the divisor. The mixed number puts that remainder over the divisor. To divide decimals, move the decimal point in the divisor until it is a whole number and move the dividend the same number of places. Bringing down zeros continues the decimal. If a remainder repeats, those digits repeat.
Example. 157 ÷ 12 = 13 R 1 = 13 1/12 = 13.08(3). Check: 12 × 13 + 1 = 157.
Example. 3.6 ÷ 1.2 moves the decimal one place and becomes 36 ÷ 12 = 3. Dividing by zero is undefined.
Frequently asked questions
What are the steps of long division?
Divide, multiply, subtract, and bring down the next digit. Repeat until no digits remain.
How do I check my answer?
Divisor x quotient + remainder should equal the dividend. For 157 / 12: 12 x 13 + 1 = 157.
How do I get a decimal instead of a remainder?
Add a decimal point and zeros to the dividend and keep dividing. The tool can stop at any number of places or show a repeating pattern.
How do I write the remainder as a fraction?
Put the remainder over the divisor. 157 / 12 = 13 1/12.
Can I divide decimals?
Yes. Move the decimal point in the divisor to make it a whole number, and move the dividend's decimal the same number of places.
