Each share

Rent and shared bill shares for each roommate
RoommateRentBillsTotalPercent
Jordan$1,500.00$0.00$1,500.0075.00%
Riley$500.00$0.00$500.0025.00%
Total$2,000.00$0.00$2,000.00100.00%

Shares are rounded to the cent. Leftover pennies are assigned so the dollars add back to the rent and the shared bills.

How to use

  1. Enter the total rent and any shared bills, such as utilities or internet. Use 0 when there are no bills.
  2. Add each roommate. For a size split, enter bedroom square footage. For an income split, enter income.
  3. Choose Evenly, By bedroom size, or By income.
  4. Read each person's rent, bills, total, and percent. The dollar totals add back to the full amount.

Formula

An even split divides rent by the number of roommates. A size split is rent times that bedroom's area divided by the total bedroom area. An income split is rent times that person's income divided by the combined income. Shared bills are split evenly and added on top. Amounts are rounded to the cent, and leftover pennies go to the largest remainder so the shares match the total exactly.

Example. A $2,000 rent split by bedrooms of 150 and 50 sq ft charges the larger room $1,500.00 (75%) and the smaller room $500.00 (25%).

Example. Incomes of $60,000 and $40,000 on that $2,000 rent charge $1,200.00 and $800.00. Add $100 of shared bills to an even split between two people and each person pays $1,000.00 in rent plus $50.00 in bills, $1,050.00 total.

Cents add back to the total

Each share is rounded to the cent. Leftover pennies go to the largest remainder so the shares add up to the rent, and shared bills add up to the bill total. A $100 rent split three ways is $33.34, $33.33, and $33.33.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fairest way to split rent?

Many roommates split by bedroom size so bigger rooms pay more, while couples or friends with different incomes often split in proportion to income. The calculator lets you compare both.

How does splitting rent by room size work?

Each person pays a share of rent equal to their bedroom area divided by the total bedroom area. Common areas are shared evenly.

How do you split rent by income?

Each person pays their income divided by the combined income, times the rent. Someone earning 60% of the household income pays 60% of the rent.

Can I include utilities?

Yes. Add shared bills and the tool splits them evenly on top of each rent share.

Does it handle rounding cents?

Yes. Shares are rounded to the cent and any leftover penny is assigned so the total matches the rent exactly.
