MB to GB Converter

Converts megabytes to gigabytes and back, with a toggle for decimal SI units (1 GB = 1,000 MB, used by drive makers) and binary units (1 GiB = 1,024 MiB, used by many operating systems). Also shows KB, TB, KiB and TiB.

Unit system

Decimal SI units: 1 GB = 1,000 MB. Drive makers use this scale.

Divide by 1,000 for decimal gigabytes.

Multiply by 1,000 for decimal megabytes.

Converted units

Bytes
5,000,000,000 bytes
Kilobytes (KB)
5,000,000 KB
Megabytes (MB)
5,000 MB
Gigabytes (GB)
5 GB
Terabytes (TB)
0.005 TB
Kibibytes (KiB)
4,882,812.5 KiB
Mebibytes (MiB)
4,768.371582 MiB
Gibibytes (GiB)
4.656613 GiB
Tebibytes (TiB)
0.004547 TiB

Both columns are the same number of bytes. Decimal mode reads the entry as MB or GB. Binary mode reads it as MiB or GiB.

How to use

  1. Enter a size in megabytes or gigabytes. The other field updates as you type.
  2. Choose decimal (1 GB = 1,000 MB) or binary (1 GiB = 1,024 MiB). Decimal reads the fields as MB and GB. Binary reads them as MiB and GiB.
  3. Read KB, MB, GB, and TB, plus KiB, MiB, GiB, and TiB. Every row is the same number of bytes.

Formula

Decimal units step by 1,000: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000 KB, 1 GB = 1,000 MB, and 1 TB = 1,000 GB. Binary units step by 1,024: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB, and 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB. In decimal mode the megabyte field is 1,000,000 bytes. In binary mode that field is one mebibyte, 1,048,576 bytes. The other column converts those bytes into the other system.

Example. 5,000 in decimal mode is 5 GB, 5,000,000 KB, and 0.005 TB. Those 5,000,000,000 bytes are 4.656613 GiB. Switch to binary and the same 5,000 is 4.882813 GiB, which is 5,000 divided by 1,024. 1,000 decimal GB is 1 TB (1,000,000,000,000 bytes) and 931.322575 GiB.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB are in a GB?

In decimal units, 1 GB = 1,000 MB. In binary units, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB.

Why does my 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?

The drive is sold in decimal units (1,000,000,000,000 bytes), but the computer reports binary gibibytes, so it shows about 931 GiB.

How do I convert MB to GB?

Divide by 1,000 for decimal GB, or by 1,024 for binary GiB. 5,000 MB = 5 GB or about 4.88 GiB.

Is MB the same as Mb?

No. MB is megabytes; Mb is megabits. 1 byte = 8 bits, so 100 Mb = 12.5 MB.

Which one should I use?

Use decimal for storage and data plans, and binary when matching what Windows reports.
