Density Calculator

This density calculator solves for density, mass, or volume with ρ = m / V, converts common units, and compares the result with water, ice, aluminum, iron, and gold.

Density is mass divided by volume. The other two are the inputs.

The result is also shown in the other common units.

ρ = m / V = 250 g / 100 cm³ = 2.5 g/cm³ (2,500 kg/m³).

2.5 g/cm³ is denser than water, so it sinks. Nearest listed material: aluminum (2.70 g/cm³). References: water 1.00, ice 0.917, aluminum 2.70, iron 7.87, gold 19.3 g/cm³.

Reference densities are typical values for comparison. The math stays in your browser.

How to use

  1. Choose density, mass, or volume as the value to solve for.
  2. Enter the other two measurements and their units. Mass can be mg, g, kg, oz, or lb. Volume can be mL, cm³, L, m³, in³, ft³, or US gallons.
  3. Choose the unit for the answer. Density units include g/cm³, kg/m³, g/mL, lb/ft³, lb/in³, and lb/gal.
  4. Read the answer, the same result in other units, the substituted formula, and how it compares with water, ice, aluminum, iron, and gold.

Formula

Density is ρ = m / V. Mass is m = ρ × V. Volume is V = m / ρ. Values convert to grams and cubic centimeters before the arithmetic, then convert to the unit you chose. One g/mL equals one g/cm³, and kg/m³ is g/cm³ × 1,000. Every input must be greater than zero.

Example. A 250 g object with a volume of 100 cm³ has density ρ = 250 / 100 = 2.5 g/cm³, which is 2,500 kg/m³. That is denser than water (1.00 g/cm³) and close to aluminum (2.70 g/cm³).

Example. Mass from density and volume: m = 2.5 g/cm³ × 100 cm³ = 250 g. Volume from mass and density: V = 250 g / 2.5 g/cm³ = 100 cm³.

Example. Multiplying 2.5 g/cm³ by 1,000 gives 2,500 kg/m³. One g/mL is the same as one g/cm³.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for density?

Density equals mass divided by volume (rho = m / V). A 250 g object with a volume of 100 cm3 has a density of 2.5 g/cm3.

How do I find mass from density and volume?

Multiply density by volume: m = rho x V. Make sure the units match, for example g/cm3 with cm3.

How do I find volume from density and mass?

Divide mass by density: V = m / rho.

What is the density of water?

About 1 g/cm3 (1,000 kg/m3) at around 4 C. Objects denser than water sink and less dense ones float.

How do I convert g/cm3 to kg/m3?

Multiply by 1,000. 2.7 g/cm3 (aluminum) is 2,700 kg/m3. One g/mL equals one g/cm3.
